Yarmouth Substance Awareness Committee approves Board of Health treasurer role, hears Sharing Kindness presentation

Yarmouth Substance Awareness Committee unanimously approved Hillard Boskey for the Board of Health and Treasurer position and heard from Sharing Kindness co-founder Kim Mead-Walters on regional suicide prevention and grief support services. Mead-Walters reported that 1 in 9 children in Barnstable County experience bereavement by age 18, with overdose-related accidental deaths as the leading cause, and that bereaved youth are 1 to 15 percent more likely to develop substance use disorders in adulthood. The committee also set a public hearing for March 2, 2026, on a potential ban on the manufacturing, sale, and distribution of kratom, an unregulated herbal substance with opioid-like effects recently appearing in local convenience stores.
