Yarmouth Public Art Committee Launches Drafting of Town's First Formal Policy
Other Committee · Meeting of May 4, 2026
Yarmouth's Public Art Committee began drafting the town's first formal public art policy at its May 4 meeting. Director of Community Development Megan Eldridge led four committee members through a comparison of model policies from Boston, Fredericksburg, Virginia, and Athens, Georgia, settling on a six-section framework covering definition, goals, funding, maintenance, project review, and education. The committee flagged First Amendment risk in any content-based review process, citing a disputed mural denial in neighboring Hyannis, and agreed to consult with organizers of a public forum held there.
Member Sarah Porter raised the possibility of a dedicated public art funding bucket within the town's tourism revenue allocations, which Eldridge said would require a vote by the Community and Economic Development Committee and could not take effect before fiscal year 2028. A fifth committee member is expected to be appointed by the Select Board on May 5, with the full committee set to elect a chair and vice chair at the June 1 meeting.
