Select Board Rejects Paving of Summer Street

Select Board · Meeting of September 29, 2026

Yarmouth Select Board unanimously rejects paving the last unpaved stretch of Summer Street after a nearly three-hour hearing. Public Works Director Jeff Colby pegged a rough cost at $403,000, while the town said it received close to 40 letters opposed and none in favor. Henry Tufts, whose family deeded Dennis Pond beach to the town in 1961, warned paving would breach the gift's child-safety conditions and threatened to "take this beach back." The board separately voted unanimously to approve two Yarmouth sites for a $436,000 Bass River oyster reef restoration with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries and The Nature Conservancy, adopted its FY2028 budget policy capping school assessment growth at 2.5 percent, and endorsed Michael J.

Farrell as Building, Grounds & Energy Management Superintendent 2-0 with one abstention. Consultant Kleinfelder reported PFAS from the Barnstable Fire Training Academy and the airport continues reaching Yarmouth groundwater and surface water, including a chemical with no state standard.
