Yarmouth Panel Eyes $50,000 Sand Sculpture Overhaul

Other Committee · Meeting of August 24, 2026

Yarmouth panel hears pitch to cut the chamber of commerce out of sand sculpture trail funding. Sculptor Sean Fitzpatrick, who has run the trail since 2011, asked the Community and Economic Development Committee for about $50,000 in tourism revenue fund money to administer the event directly, raising business fees from $1,000 to $1,500 per sculpture while the town absorbs the rest of each sculpture's true $5,027 cost. Fitzpatrick said he has returned $1.125 million in discounted value to Yarmouth businesses over the past decade and called a planned $50,000 marketing expenditure "very questionable." Chamber liaison Tom Nicanello told the committee "the man wouldn't invest in Yarmouth unless they had a sand sculpture," describing business owners who credited the trail with their investment decisions.

The committee reviewed roughly $658,000 in existing tourism fund balances but took no vote, asking Fitzpatrick to submit a written funding application.
